Cause
Mostly an increase in the size of the masseter (chewing muscles) results in a widening of the jaw line and a square-like appearance of the face.
A square jaw is feature that may not be always be desired, especially in females. It may also be due to bruxism (grinding of the teeth) or in some cases it can be a genetic trait. Furthermore, slimming the jaw line can help to convert a square-shaped face into the much-desired and youthful upside down triangle shape (or triangle of youth).
Treatment
By injecting Botox injections into the main muscle that causes the bulk (the masseter muscle), the squareness of the jaw can be reduced significantly. The procedure has virtually no downtime and the results are visible in just 2-3 weeks.
By relaxing the muscles in the neck that pull the jaw line/jowls/cheeks down it is possible to lift the jowls and improve the jaw line. This technique is referred to as the Nefertiti lift, after the Egyptian Queen known for her defined jaw line.
The chin is an important feature of the lower third of the face. By enhancing the chin, the jaw line can be sharpened, the profile of the face balanced, and the apparent amount of excess skin and fat in the neck can look reduced. Chin enhancement can be performed by injecting dermal fillers into the area of the chin. Temporary fillers simply improve the shape and forward protrusion of the chin. The results from this treatment can last around 6 to 18 months depending on the type of filler used. The downtime, swelling and bruising associated with this procedure is minimal. Juvederm Ultra XC Plus or VOLUMA is an example of dermal filler that is long-lasting and suitable for the chin due to its firm consistency.
Another option to slim the jaw line is by doing the RF skin tightening over parts of the lower face and jaw line. This is only suitable for those who have excess fat (and not muscle) in these areas.
